ISO 23388 Standard Test Method for Protective Gloves Against Mechanical Risks

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ISO 23388 standard. This standard specifies the requirements, test methods, marking and information to be provided for protective gloves against mechanical risks such as abrasion, stab cut, tear, puncture and impact if any.

Every area where impact protection is requested will be tested. Due to the test method (dimensions of the test specimens), protection against impacts on the fingers cannot be tested. A protective glove against mechanical risks can be designed and constructed to provide certain impact attenuation (eg impact protection of knuckles, back of hand, palm).

Circular samples of material are abraded under known pressure in a cyclic planar motion in the form of a Lissajous figure (wear cycle) that is the result of simple harmonic motions at right angles to each other. Resistance to abrasion is measured by the number of frictions required for breakthrough to occur.

Cut four test specimens to the correct dimensions, diameter (38,0 ± 0,5) mm. Carefully and centrally fix the test specimen on the metal attachment without tension with double-sided adhesive tape. It is applied under a weight of approximately 5 kg for at least 10 minutes. Good adhesion can be achieved by using double-sided tape, which prevents the test specimen from loosening and the penetration of air bubbles. Place the sample holder's ring in place on the mounting plate provided at the base of the machine.

Some materials may require longer contact time to ensure maximum adhesion between the test sample and the adhesive tape. Surface treatment (for example, hair removal) can be used to improve adhesion between the test sample and the adhesive tape, but this should not affect the performance of the material during testing. If a different contact time (>5 min) or a surface treatment is used, this should be reported.
