Penetration by Chemicals (EN 16523-1)

The European standard EN 16523-1 describes the properties and test methods for determining material resistance to chemical penetration. In our country, it has been published by the Turkish Standards Institute (TSE) with the following title: TS EN 16523-1 Determination of material resistance against penetration of chemicals - Part 1: Penetration with potentially hazardous liquid chemicals under continuous contact conditions.

Penetration by Chemicals (EN 16523-1)

In fact, this standard fulfills the previously published standard of TS EN 374-3 Protective gloves - Against chemicals and microorganisms - Part 3: Determination of resistance to chemical permeability.

Both the EN 374-3 standard and the EN 16523-1 standard, which replaces it, ensure consistency in tests and help users and safety professionals determine their chemical protection needs. The revised requirements are reflected in pictograms appearing on gloves and glove dispensing boxes approved for chemical and microorganism exposure.

One of the three different test methods applied in the degradation tests of protective gloves by chemical substances is the permeability test performed according to EN 16523-1 standard. The other two tests are the penetration test according to the EN 374-2 standard and the deterioration test according to the EN 374-4 standard.

Briefly, standard EN 16523-1 describes a test method for determining the resistance of protective clothing, gloves and footwear materials to penetration by potentially hazardous liquid chemicals under the condition of continuous contact. This test method applies to the evaluation of protection against liquid chemicals that can only be collected in liquid or gaseous form. This test method is not used for evaluating chemical compositions other than aqueous solutions.

This standard is used with the specifications given in the product standards where the following information is defined: any preconditioning, exact sampling (location, size and number) and associated performance levels.

Our organization also provides services for penetration by chemicals (EN 16523-1) within the framework of hand protection equipment testing services.
