Thermal Performance (EN 407)

The EN 407 standard, which is a European standard, describes the thermal performance properties and test methods of protective clothing against thermal risks such as heat and fire. This standard has been published in our country by the Turkish Standards Institute (TSE) with the following title: TS EN 407 Protective gloves against thermal risks (heat and / or fire).

Thermal Performance (EN 407)

This standard covers the requirements and test methods for protective gloves that protect against high heat or fire. The numbers next to the mark on the gloves show the glove performance for each test included in the standard. The higher these numbers, the higher the performance level.

The tests applied within the scope of the standard are:

  • Ignition resistance
  • Contact heat resistance
  • Convective heat resistance
  • Radiant heat resistance
  • Resistance to small splashes from molten metal
  • Resistance to large splashes from molten metal

For example, in the ignition resistance test, the ignition time and how long the material glows after ignition or the burning time are measured. If the stitch breaks after a 15 second ignition time, the glove test is considered a failure. In the contact heat resistance test, the glove is exposed to temperatures between 100-500 degrees. The time taken for the head of the inside of the glove to become 10 degrees warmer is then measured. The glove must withstand the maximum temperature of at least 10 degrees for 15 seconds for approval.

In these tests, the evaluation is made between 0-4 and the performance level of the protective glove is determined. In order for gloves to pass these tests, they must show at least first level performance in abrasion and tear resistance from mechanical tests.

Protective gloves have a six-digit number with the symbol of heat and flame. Each figure shows the performance value of the tests listed above, respectively.

Our organization also provides thermal performance (EN 407) testing services to businesses within the framework of hand protection equipment testing services.
