BS 7671 Requirements for Electrical Installations - IET Wiring Regulations

BS 7671 applies to circuits supplied at rated voltages up to 1000 volts AC or 1500 volts DC (Uo). Therefore, the standard covers the Extra Low Voltage (ELV) range (0-50V AC, 0-125V DC) and the Low Voltage (LV) range (50-1000V AC, 125-1500V DC).

Frequencies covered for AC are 50 Hz, 60 Hz and 400 Hz, which are used for homes, offices and commerce in the UK. It did not become a recognized British Standard until the publication of its 1992th edition in 16. The standard takes into account the technical essence of the agreements reached at CENELEC.

There is no legal requirement in itself to comply with BS 7671 requirements, but many codes, including Electrical, Safety, Quality and Continuity Regulations 2002 and Building Regulations 2010 Part P, refer to BS 7671 as the standard to be achieved. According to the contract, BS 7671 can be specified as the standard to be followed. In this case, general law will apply.

It should be noted that BS 7671 is a minimum standard and the focus should always be on exceeding its requirements rather than aiming for compliance. BS 7671 is a document that, if adhered to, provides good evidence of intent to comply with the law and is accepted as a defense in court. The requirements of the IET Cabling Regulations are well accepted and in line with European and international standards and are generally considered good industry practice.
