EN 50244 Testing of Electrical Appliances for the Detection of Combustible Gases in Houses

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of EN 50244 testing. This European Standard provides information on the selection, installation, use and maintenance of apparatus for the detection of flammable gases designed for continuous operation in a fixed installation in residential premises, as described in the EN 50194 series. This standard should be read in conjunction with any relevant additional national or local regulations.

EN 50244 Testing of Electrical Appliances for the Detection of Combustible Gases in Houses

The draft European Standard refers to the installation of two types of apparatus designed to operate in the event of a city gas, natural gas or liquefied petroleum gas escaping:

  • Type A apparatus - form of an output signal capable of directly or indirectly actuating a shutdown device or other auxiliary device to provide a visual and audible alarm and an act of execution;
  • Type B apparatus - to provide visual and audible alarms only.

There are three main hazards from flammable gases: explosion, poisoning, and annoxia (insufficient oxygen). This standard only deals with the explosion hazard of flammable gases.

The dispersed gas has an added odor at its source to allow the general public to recognize any leaks by a characteristic odour. Most people can detect this odor at fairly low gas concentration levels (2% LEL or less), but some medical conditions and advancing age can cause a diminished sense of smell. A gradually increasing gas concentration may also go unnoticed due to olfactory fatigue.

Various additional options may be available in addition to gas detection for the person choosing the apparatus to be installed. Some systems may contain sensors different from those for the detection of flammable gases such as carbon monoxide, and care must be taken to avoid confusion between different signals which may require conflicting actions by the user. Such problems are best overcome by integrating individual apparatuses with a central control and alarm announcer.
