IEC EN 60695-7-1 Fire Hazard Testing - Part 7-1: Toxicity of Fire Wastes - General Guide

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of IEC EN 60695-7-1 test. This part of IEC EN 60695 provides guidance on factors influencing toxic hazard from fires involving electrotechnical products and provides information on proposed methodologies for estimating and reducing toxic hazard from fires as expressed in ISO by ISO TC 92 (SC 3).

IEC EN 60695-7-1 Fire Hazard Testing - Part 7-1: Toxicity of Fire Wastes - General Guide

There is no single test to realistically assess the toxic hazard in fires. Small scale toxic effects tests are not by themselves capable of assessing the toxic hazard in fires. Current toxicity tests attempt to quantify the toxic effect of a fire waste produced in the laboratory. Toxic potential should not be confused with toxic hazard.

One of the responsibilities of a technical committee is to leverage key security publications in the preparation of their publications, where applicable. The requirements, test methods or test conditions of this essential safety publication will not apply unless specifically referred to or included in the relevant publications.

Electrotechnical products are sometimes involved in fires. However, except in certain special cases (e.g. power generation stations, public transport tunnels, computer rooms), electrotechnical products are not normally available in sufficient quantities to constitute the main source of toxic hazards. For example, in residential and public gathering places, electrotechnical products are often a very small source of fire waste compared to furniture, for example.

The amount of waste produced is proportional to the amount of product burned or pyrolyzed. The rate of effluent formation is determined by the rate of combustion or pyrolysis. Therefore, in order to minimize the toxic hazard, it is necessary to reduce flammability and reduce the burning rate, that is, to reduce the rates of fire growth and flame spread.
