EN 50194-1 Electrical Equipment for Detection of Combustible Gases in Houses - Test Methods

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of EN 50194-1 testing. This European Standard specifies general requirements for the construction, testing and performance of electrically powered devices for the detection of combustible gases designed for continuous operation in a fixed installation in homes. The device can run on electricity or batteries. Additional requirements for apparatus to be used in recreational vehicles and similar facilities are specified in EN 50194-2.

EN 50194-1 Electrical Equipment for Detection of Combustible Gases in Houses - Test Methods

This European Standard specifies two types of devices that will operate in the event of a city gas, natural gas or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) escape:

  • Type A device - an output signal capable of directly or indirectly actuating a shutdown device or other auxiliary device to provide a visual and audible alarm and an act of execution such as;
  • Type B apparatus - to provide a visual and audible alarm only.

Unless otherwise stated, the stated requirements apply to both Type A and Type B devices. The apparatus will reliably detect the presence of flammable gas in residential premises under specified application conditions, generate an alarm and, in the case of Type A apparatus, be able to initiate execution operations when the level exceeds a preset alarm volume rate.

The purpose of the standard is to ensure that electric gas detectors are reliable, accurate and safe for residential use. The standard specifies performance requirements for gas detectors, including sensitivity, response time, and false alarm rate. It also specifies the test methods that should be used to evaluate the performance of gas detectors.

The standard includes guidelines for the installation and use of gas detectors, including the placement of detectors, the use of warning signals, and the maintenance of detectors to ensure their continued effectiveness. It also covers marking and labeling requirements to ensure that gas detectors can be easily identified and clearly indicate the types of gases they can detect.

In general, the EN 50194-1 standard provides a comprehensive set of guidelines for the design, testing and use of residential electric gas detectors. By following these guidelines, gas detector manufacturers, suppliers and users can ensure that their products meet required performance standards and that they can detect flammable gases in residential buildings with reliability and accuracy.
