IEC EN 60700-2 Thyristor Valves for High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) Power Transmission - Part 2: Terminology

IEC EN 60700-2 defines terms for thyristor valves for high voltage direct current (HVDC) power transmission with line commutated converters, most commonly based on three-phase bridge connections for conversion from AC to DC and vice versa.

It covers all equipment between the common port on the AC side and the common port on the DC side, mainly one or more converter bridges, one or more converter transformers, converter unit control equipment, basic shielding and, if any, switching devices and auxiliaries used for conversion.

It gives the maximum number of thyristor levels in a thyristor valve that can be shorted externally or internally during service without affecting the safe operation of the thyristor valve as demonstrated by type tests, and which, if exceeded, will require the valve to be closed for replacement.

Each valve design shall be subjected to the type tests specified in this standard. If the valve is obviously similar to the one previously tested, the supplier may, instead of performing a type test, submit a test report of a previous type test for consideration by the purchaser. This should be accompanied by a separate report detailing the differences in design and showing how the referenced type test met the test objectives for the proposed design.

Failure or external flashing in the common electrical equipment associated with more than one thyristor level of the valve or destructive discharge in the dielectric material forming part of the valve structure, cooling channels, light guides or other insulating parts of the pulse transmission and distribution system is not allowed.
