It can be applied to heat-resistant aluminum alloy wires before twisting for the production of stranded conductors for overhead lines. Specifies the mechanical, electrical and thermal resistance properties of wires within a range of commercially available diameters.
The surface of the wire shall be visually observed to check for smoothness and freedom from defects consistent with good commercial practice.
The sample shall be measured by means of a micrometer or other suitable device having an accuracy of 5/1000 mm. The diameter will be determined by two measurements taken at right angles on the same section.
The ultimate elongation measured at no load will be determined on the sample. The sample should be straightened by hand and the original gauge length of 250 mm marked on the wire and loaded as described for the tensile tensile test. After the wire is broken, the ends of the sample should be carefully brought together and the distance between the measurement marks should be measured.
A sample cut from one end of the sample should be subjected to the winding test. It shall be wound eight turns around a mandrel with a diameter equal to the nominal diameter of the wire and at a speed not to exceed 60 turns/min. The wire should not break.
