Test for SAE J78 Steel Drill Bit Screws

This standard covers dimensional and general specifications, including performance requirements, for carbon steel self-drilling screws suitable for use in general applications.

The purpose of this document is to enable carbon steel self-drilling screws to meet specified mechanical and performance requirements to drill a hole and form or cut mating threads in the materials into which they are driven without deforming their own threads and threads.

It has been added to provide a recommended technique for measuring case depth on screws.

CSD screws will have threads of machine screw diameter-pitch combinations that approach unified form with drill points of varying configuration, designated Style 6, Style 2, Style 3, and Style 4, designed to accommodate different panel thickness conditions as defined in Chapter 5. CSD screws are not threaded but must meet the dimensions specified in this document. It is designed for applications where it is preferred to use a machine screw pitch thread instead of an intermittent thread.

The head types and drive types applicable to self-tapping screws covered in this document will include those specified, with the exception of slotted head and hex (without washer) head designs, which are not recommended for self-tapping screws.
