EN 50363 contains in its various parts the requirements for insulation, coating and coating materials used for harmonized low voltage power cables. EN 50363 is published as this Chapter 0 with a number of separately published chapters and these chapters require Chapter 0 to be read in conjunction with them. It also contains a list of test methods invoked in certain parts of the standard, with references to current versions of other standards for which relevant test methods are given.
EN 50363, in its various parts, contains requirements for insulation, coating and coating materials used for low voltage power cables harmonized in EN 50525.
The content of EN 50363 is not and will not be limited only to cable materials according to EN 50525. Other materials may be included for harmonized LV industrial cables. Also, the use of materials in EN 50525 for cables other than EN 50363 is not prohibited, but expert advice is strongly recommended prior to such use or any proposal for inclusion in another standard.
Unless otherwise specified in the standard for a particular cable, insulation tests should be performed on samples taken from each core if the cable has one, two or three cores; and if the cable has more than three cores, in samples taken from three cores (different colors if any), samples should be taken at least 16 hours after extrusion and crosslinked if appropriate.
The requirements for the various types of compounds are drafted so that compliance can be checked by testing samples from the finished cable.
