In this standard, the word "device" means "device or equipment". These switches are intended to be operated by a person, via an actuation element, or by actuation of a sensing unit. The actuation element or sensing unit can be arranged or integrated separately from the switch.
The transmission of a signal between the actuating element or sensing unit and the switch may be physical or electrical (eg electrical, optical, acoustic or thermal). Switches that contain additional control functions managed by the switch function are within the scope of this document.
This standard also covers indirect operation of the switch when the operation of the actuating element or sensing unit is provided by a part of a device such as a remote control or a door.
Electronic switches can be combined with mechanical switches that provide full disconnect or micro disconnect.
Electronic switches without a mechanical switch in the supply circuit provide only electronic disconnection. Therefore, the load-side circuit is always considered live.
Additional requirements may apply for switches used in tropical climates.
