Measurements can be made using a network analyzer (or alternatively a separate signal generator and receiver), an LCR-meter, or an impedance measuring bridge (Wheatstone-, MaxwellBridge).

The length of the test specimen should be between 10 m and 100 m. If the attenuation of the cable is small enough, the measurement can be performed at one distribution length. Practically this means that the two values ​​measuring the input impedance at the near end of the cable are different, when the CUT at the far end is open or shorted.

The effect of the connecting cables used to connect the CUT to the equipment will be measured at the relevant frequency. The calibration procedure for network analyzers (similar to LCR-meters) is given in EN 50289-1-11.
