Maximum sound pressure output is limited by voice coil heating and transducer nonlinearity. The large-signal behavior of loudspeakers can be explained by nonlinear and thermal models using aggregate parameters. These physical properties are important for transducer design and system integration.
The mechanical vibration of the diaphragm determines the emitted sound. The modal vibration of the radiator surface can be estimated by numerical simulations (FEA) and directly measured by laser vibrometry. These data represent important transducer properties that can be used to design the desired routing to the acoustic output of the system.
DSP plays an important role in active systems. Digital preprocessing of the audio stream requires reliable transducer specification knowledge to protect the transducer against thermal and mechanical overload and to actively compensate for the linear and nonlinear distortion produced in the output signal.
