IEC EN 60598-2-20 specifies requirements for lighting chains equipped with series, parallel or a combination of series/parallel connected light sources for indoor or outdoor use at supply voltages not exceeding 250 V.
Lighting chains supplied with fixed or detachable attachments, e.g. decorative or ornamental articles are considered to be covered by this standard. For lighting chains equipped with push-in sockets, the relevant requirements of this standard apply. For lighting chains with non-standardized lamps (for example, push-in type lamps), the lamps are considered part of the lighting chain and are consequently included in the test.
Gaskets used to ensure the specified degree of protection of lighting chains against dust, solid objects and moisture for outdoor use shall be weatherproof. Such gaskets should remain in place on the chain when the lamp is removed and fit snugly around the installed lamp.
Control units and similar devices, which form an integral part of the lighting chain, will be surrounded by non-combustible insulating material. It will also be securely fastened to the cable of the chain.
No damage to safety should occur during each application of the specified forces, and in particular, no breakage or separation of the lamp glass cover from the lamp cover should occur. Compliance is checked on three new samples by manual testing, measuring forces and inspection.
Conformity should be checked by means of a round-tipped flat probe with a radius of 0,5 mm, 8 mm thick and 4 mm wide. With the supplied lamps attached to the chain, it will not be possible to touch the live parts with this probe when applied in any position with a force not exceeding 0,5 N.
