It is applicable to continuous creep testing of stranded conductors for overhead lines such as those specified by IEC EN 61089. Procedures for interpreting results are also included. The purpose of the test is basically to calculate the creep for any purpose and compare the creep of different conductors.
The requirement of this standard aims for an accuracy of 1%. However, due to changes in the manufacturing process, it must be recognized that the creep obtained in the test is not an absolute value for all conductors of the tested type.
Calibration records of all instruments used in testing should be kept to ensure traceable accuracy of the test. Equipment must be calibrated to nationally recognized standards. In the absence of such standards, the basis used for calibration should be documented.
The conductor temperature should be measured in the middle and at both ends of the gauge length during testing. The measuring instruments must be in good contact with the conductor sample and insulated against the effects of air movements outside the conductor. Unless otherwise stated, the temperature of the test should be 20°C.
Sample preparation aims to prepare a sample for creep testing in which all strips are stretched as evenly as possible during testing. This achieves the same pull-up conditions that naturally occur on very long transmission lines in use. Therefore, unnecessary winding and bending of the conductor should be avoided.
