IEC EN 61462 Test for Composite Hollow Insulators

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of IEC EN 61462 testing. This standard applies to composite hollow insulators consisting of a load-bearing insulating tube made of resin-impregnated fibres, a casing made of elastomeric material (e.g. silicone or ethylene-propylene) (outside the insulating tube), and metal fastening devices at the ends.

IEC EN 61462 Test for Composite Hollow Insulators

Composite hollow insulators consist of an insulating tube that carries the mechanical load protected by an elastomeric enclosure, the loads are transmitted to the tube by metal fittings.

Despite these common features, the materials and construction details used by different manufacturers may differ.

Some tests are grouped as "Design tests" to be performed only once for insulators of the same design and material. Design tests are performed to eliminate designs and materials unsuitable for high voltage applications.

The influence of time on the electrical and mechanical properties of the complete composite hollow insulator and its components (tube material, casing material, interfaces, etc.) has been considered in determining the design tests to ensure a satisfactory service life under normal service conditions. These conditions may also depend on the equipment inside or outside the composite hollow insulators; however, this issue is not addressed in this standard.

Test methods not specified in this standard may be considered for certain material combinations and specific applications and are subject to agreement between manufacturers and users. In this standard, the term "user" generally means a manufacturer of equipment using composite hollow insulators.

The mechanical properties of composite hollow insulators are quite different from those of ceramic hollow insulators. Strain gauge measurements are used to determine the onset of mechanical failure of composite hollow insulators under the influence of mechanical stress.
