IEC EN 62595-1-4 Display Illumination Unit - Part 1-4: Standard Test for Glass Light Guide Plate

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of IEC EN 62595-1-4 testing. This part of IEC EN 62595, a technical report, provides general information for assessing the need for future standardization of glass light guide plates for display lighting units, including backlight units for transmission displays such as LCDs, and front light units for reflective displays.

IEC EN 62595-1-4 Display Illumination Unit - Part 1-4: Standard Test for Glass Light Guide Plate

Glass light guide plate (GLGP) provides distinctive display product features such as thinner, lighter, larger and narrower bezel design with few additional material properties and stability compared to traditional polymer light guide plate. This standard aims to explore the image product features enabled by GLGP and identify possible future standardization.

The main function of GLGP is light propagation from the incident edge to the output surface, and both luminescence and luminous flux and chromaticity are expected to be uniform across the entire output surface. Application of reflective bands around one or three side (undeveloped) surfaces of GLGP can increase gloss and uniformity. The uniformity of illuminant power and chromaticity depend on optical absorption, loss of scattering during propagation, and loss of LED coupling at the incident edge.

While anticipation has risen, several major hurdles need to be overcome before GLGPs can become popular. One is the facility asset: the existing production lines of BLUs, their supply chains are basically optimized to use polymer LGPs and it is not easy to convert them to use GLGPs. Another big problem is the lack of appropriate information: most of the documentation on LGP has been prepared with the use of polymers in mind, so it is difficult to find appropriate information. Evaluation methods were also designed with the use of polymers in mind, so some of these, such as optical properties, mechanical and environmental properties, seem inappropriate for glass. If accurate recognition of the difference between these two materials is not sufficient, biased knowledge and experience with polymer LGP may hinder the adoption of glass materials.
