EN 50289-1-4 Communication Cables - Specifications for Test Methods - Part 1-4: Electrical Test Methods - Insulation Resistance Test

Section 50289-1 of EN 4 details test methods for determining the insulation resistance of finished cables used in analog and digital communication systems. It should be read in conjunction with EN 50289 section 1-1, which contains the essential provisions for its application.

Generally, the test is performed on a delivery length. Both ends of the cable under test must be prepared so that when the specified voltage is applied to the conductor/screen under test, there will be no breakdown or significant partial discharge at the terminals.

The test should be performed on the cable being tested after a continuity or conductor resistance test. The measurement must be made on all lengths of the finished cable at a temperature specified in the relevant cable standard.

The test should be performed by applying a DC voltage between 80 V and 500 V for at least one minute, unless otherwise specified in the relevant cable specification.

The core test is performed by applying the test voltage between each conductor and all other conductors and the shield (if any) connected to earth. Group testing (if applicable) is performed by applying test voltage between each group and all other groups plus the shield (if applicable) grounded.
