GR 63 NEBS Requirements - Physical Protection

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, offers precise and rapid testing services within the scope of the GR 63 test. This General Requirements standard (GR) provides minimum spatial and environmental criteria for all new telecommunications equipment used in Central Offices (COs) and other areas of environmentally controlled telecommunications equipment.

GR 63 NEBS Requirements - Physical Protection

They apply to switching and transport systems, associated Cable Distribution Systems (CDSs), Distribution and Interconnection Frames (DFs and IFs), power equipment, operations support systems and Cable Entry Facilities (CEFs). Compliance with these requirements can increase the robustness of the network, simplify equipment installation, and support economical planning, engineering, and operation of equipment sites.

Telecommunications equipment may be subject to environmental stresses due to the nature of its physical installation in a building. General criteria are intended to help prevent equipment damage and failure caused by factors such as temperature and humidity, vibration, and airborne contaminants.

This standard provides requirements for physical aspects of equipment-structure interfaces only, including physical dimensions and environmental performance criteria. Additional design requirements, including functional, electrical, and reliability requirements, can be found in other general requirements documents.

This document reflects the collective experience of participants, the evolving needs of the industry and developments in relevant standards.

Changes to this standard include, but are not limited to:

  • Clear criteria for fire resistance of telecommunications batteries are now provided.
  • Certain chassis designs that have proven to be resistant to the spread of fire can now claim compliance with the fire spread hazard criteria based on a physical assessment without a fire spread test.
  • Hygroscopic dust resistance tests have been eliminated for products operating at voltages that have proven to be highly resistant to stray current effects.
  • Opportunities to leverage test results for resistance to mixed flowing gas have been expanded, thus reducing the need for this testing when products use proven designs and manufacturing methods.
