IEC 60168 Tests on Indoor and Outdoor Post Insulators of Ceramic Material or Glass for Systems with Nominal Voltage Greater than 1000 Volts

This International standard IEC 60168 applies to post insulators and post insulator units made of ceramic. It applies to material or glass insulators for indoor and outdoor use in electrical installations or equipment, operating with alternating current with a rated voltage greater than 1000 V and a frequency not greater than 100 Hz.

This standard can be regarded as an interim standard for post insulators for use in DC systems. IEC 60438 provides general guidance for these insulators.

This standard does not apply to composite insulators or to indoor post insulators made of organic material covered by any other IEC standard.

The purpose of this standard is to define:

• Terms used;
• Electrical and mechanical properties of pole insulators;
• Conditions in which the stated values ​​of these properties are verified;
• Test methods;
• Accept conditions.

This standard does not contain requirements for the selection of post insulators for specific operating conditions. This standard does not include radio interference tests or artificial pollution tests. These topics and related test methods are covered in other IEC publications.
