The degradation of cellulosic materials that make up the solid insulation of oil-filled electrical equipment leads to the formation of various compounds specific to cellulose decomposition, such as sugars and furan derivatives.

Furan derivatives, most of which remain adsorbed on paper, are still poorly soluble in oil. Their presence can be used as a diagnostic tool to equipment in service and to supplement information from dissolved gas analysis.

To calibrate the analysis of extracts obtained by method A, standards in solution in oil must be used.

Standards in solution, either in oil or in the eluent of chromatography, can be used to analyze extracts prepared according to method B.
