IEC EN 60906-1 applies to the IEC system of plugs and sockets rated at 200 A 250 V ac for household and similar purposes for connecting equipment to distribution systems with dimensional rated voltages between 16 V and 250 V ac. This standard does not apply to plugs and sockets rated 100 A 125 V ac for household and similar purposes for the connection of equipment to distribution systems with a rated voltage between 15 V and 125 V ac.
The aim of this International standard is to cover a safe, compact and practical IEC 16 A 250 V ac plug and socket system which may be accepted as a national standard by many countries if not in the near future. It is therefore recommended that any country requiring a new or substitute system adopt this standard as its sole national standard.
Plugs and sockets of the IEC EN 250 V System shall comply with the relevant standard pages of this standard. A rim or a recess or a combination of a rim and recess shall be provided. This size is for the cover plate, guide of pins and cover mechanism.
The grounding terminal should be indicated with the symbol IEC EN 60417-5019. Indicators should be placed inside the body next to the terminals. There is no need to mark the terminations of non-rewireable types. The distance between the insert face and the cord or cord protector, if any, shall be at least 13,5 mm.
