Covers supplies at 50 Hz or 60 Hz or DC associated with fluorescent lamps specified in IEC EN 60081 and IEC EN 60901 and other fluorescent lamps for high frequency operation, both up to 1000 V, whose operating frequencies deviate from the supply frequency.
This control assembly is designed to operate lamps at various frequencies and various lamp powers, including high frequencies. It is noted that operating frequencies below 20 kHz may cause audio interference, while frequencies above 50 kHz may increase radio interference problems.
To achieve satisfactory performance of fluorescent lamps and electronic control gears, certain features of their design must be properly coordinated. Therefore, it is important to write specifications in terms of measurements made against some common reference point that is permanent and repeatable.
These conditions can be met by reference ballasts. In addition, testing of the control gear for fluorescent lamps shall be carried out with reference lamps in general, and in particular by comparing the results obtained in such lamps with the control device to be tested and the reference ballast.
For frequencies of 50 Hz or 60 Hz, the reference ballast is a self-inductive coil, while the high-frequency reference ballast is a resistor as it is frequency independent and has no effect of parasitic capacitance.
In general, all tests are performed for each type of control device or, in the case of the power range of a similar control gear, for each nominal power in the range or on a representative selection from the range as agreed with the manufacturer.
