IEC EN 61158-3-12 defines the services provided to the Type 12 fieldbus application layer at the boundary between the application and data link layers of the bus reference model, and to systems management at the boundary between the data link layer and systems management.
Throughout the set of fieldbus standards, the term "service" refers to the abstract capability provided by a layer of the OSI Basic Reference Model to the layer immediately above. Therefore, the data link layer service defined in this standard is a conceptual architectural service independent of the administrative and application parts.
This part of IEC EN 61158 provides common elements for basic time-critical messaging communications between devices in an automation environment. The term "time critical" is used to represent the existence of a time window in which one or more specific actions must be completed with a certain level of certainty. Failure to complete specified actions within the time window risks failure of applications that demand the actions, with risk to equipment, facilities, and possibly human life.
The main purpose of this standard is to define the characteristics of conceptual data link layer services suitable for time critical communications and thus complement the OSI Basic Reference Model in guiding the development of data link protocols for time critical communications. A secondary purpose is to provide migration paths from pre-existing industrial communication protocols.
This standard does not specify individual applications or products and does not restrict the applications of data link entities within industrial automation systems.
The equipment does not comply with this data link layer service definition standard. Instead, compliance is achieved through the implementation of the relevant data link protocol that meets the Type 12 data link layer services defined in this standard.
