IEC EN 61558-2-10 deals with the safety of isolating transformers with a high insulation level and isolating transformers with output voltages exceeding 1000 V. Unless otherwise specified, the term transformer hereinafter includes isolator transformers with a high insulation level and isolator transformers with output voltages exceeding 1000 V ac or 1500 V d.c. This section 2-10 is applicable to stand-alone or associated dry-type transformers, fixed or portable, single-phase or multi-phase, air-cooled (natural or forced). Coils may be encapsulated or unencapsulated.
This standard applies to transformers and power supplies (linear) with internal operating frequencies not exceeding 500 Hz. Used in conjunction with Sections 2-16 for switched mode power supply units (SMPS), this standard also applies to power supplies with internal operating frequencies higher than 500 Hz. Where two requirements conflict, the most serious takes precedence.
Transformers in this section 2-10 are used only in applications where double or reinforced insulation between circuits is not required by installation rules or the end product standard. The input and output circuits shall be electrically separated from each other and the construction shall be such that there is no possibility of connection between these circuits directly or indirectly via other conductive parts.
