IEC EN 61823 Electrical Installations for Lighting and Signing of Airports - AGL Series Transformers

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of IEC EN 61823 testing. IEC EN 61823 specifies the characteristics of aerospace ground lighting series transformers (AGLST) used in aviation ground lighting for 30 A series circuits at service voltage up to 5 kV, supplied by constant current regulators up to 6,6 kVA.

IEC EN 61823 Electrical Installations for Lighting and Signing of Airports - AGL Series Transformers

AGL series transformers power airport lighting fixtures or other loads (with resistors) from their secondary circuits. AGL series transformers provide the continuity of the series circuit in case of loss of the load on the transformer and the electrical isolation between the primary circuit fed by the constant current regulator and the secondary circuit connected to the load, under the conditions defined in this Regulation.

AGL series transformers will have two electrically and physically separate windings, one primary and the other secondary, wound on a magnetic core. The polarity of the windings must be such that the primary plug corresponds to the large socket of the secondary socket.

Encapsulation materials must be able to withstand limited exposure to chemicals typically found at the airport, including but not limited to acid and alkaline soils, as well as oil, gasoline, and deicing fluids. Encapsulation materials must be resistant to limited UV exposure. These properties can be verified by (only) testing of material samples.

Characteristics can be verified with tests sponsored by the transformer manufacturer or with test results provided by the material manufacturer. These results can be applied to all AGL series transformers using the encapsulation material. If a transformer manufacturer uses more than one material for encapsulation, each such material must meet these requirements.

AGL series transformers are available with or without grounding. If a ground connection is provided, it must be connected to the side of the secondary winding of the transformer that is connected to the larger socket of the secondary connector. The ground connection must have a water barrier inside the transformer body.
