IEC EN 62146-1 applies to rating capacitors used in circuit breakers. Their function is to control the voltage distribution between the individual breaker units of a multi-break circuit breaker. Rating capacitors can also be used in parallel with the breaker unit in single-break circuit breakers to change the Transient Recovery Voltage (TRV). The rating capacitor is a subcomponent for the circuit breaker and must be specified according to the circuit breaker specifications.

The purpose of this standard is to define uniform rules for performances, testing and rating, define specific safety rules, and provide guidance for installation and operation.
The purpose of dielectric tests is to test the ability of the capacitor interior to withstand. Wet tests are assumed to be performed with the rating capacitor mounted on the circuit breaker as part of the circuit breaker type tests. Therefore, wet tests may not be performed for the classification capacitor alone.
The condenser should be installed for normal operation and filled with gas at maximum working pressure at ambient temperature. The capacitor should be enclosed in an envelope, for example a plastic bag. The gas concentration in the air inside the envelope should be measured twice at an interval greater than or equal to 8 hours.
