IEC EN 60584-3 standardizes these cables. This standard specifies the identification and manufacturing tolerances for extension and compensation cables (not including mineral insulated extension and compensation cables) supplied directly to industrial process users. These tolerances are determined according to the emf - temperature relationship of IEC EN 60584-1. Requirements for extension and balancing cables for use in industrial process control are specified.
It is used for the electrical connection between the open ends of a thermocouple and the reference junction in installations where the conductors of the thermocouple are not directly connected to the reference junction. The thermoelectric properties of the extension and compensation cables will be close to those of the corresponding thermocouple.
Cables shall be manufactured using twisted pair conductors or straight parallel conductors. Additional shielding should be used for the thermoelectric circuit to reduce susceptibility to electrical noise. Capacitance and inductance, both expressed per linear meter (conductor-to-conductor and conductor-to-screen, if applicable) must be present.
