The cable must be designed and manufactured for an expected operational life of at least 15 years. In this context, the attenuation of the operational wavelengths of the fiber optics in the laid cable will not exceed the values agreed between the customer and the supplier. The materials in the cable will not present a health or environmental hazard in their intended use.

Further protection can be provided by surrounding tight or semi-tight buffered fibers with non-metallic strength members in a sheath of suitable material.

The slotted core is obtained by extruding a suitable material with a defined number of slots, providing a helical or SZ (reverse oscillation) configuration along the core. Each slot contains one or more primary coated fibers or optical elements such as ribbons or fiber bundles.

Multiple tubes containing one or more primary coated or buffered fibers or strips are wound around a central member. To preserve cable geometry, some tubes may be "fill" or "empty" elements that do not contain optical fibers. The cable should be designed with elements of sufficient strength to meet the installation and service conditions so that the fibers are not subjected to stresses exceeding the limits agreed between the customer and the supplier.

Compliance with the relevant detail specification requirements should be verified by performing tests selected from the following sub-items. Not all tests are intended to be performed; The testing frequency will be agreed between the customer and the supplier. Transmission requirements will be verified against IEC EN 60793-2-10 or IEC EN 60793-2-50 and agreed between customer and supplier. Maximum cable attenuation shall be in accordance with the values specified in the relevant detail specification.
