IEC EN 62614-1 Fiber Optics - Multimode Start Conditions - Part 1: Start Condition Requirements for Measuring Multimode Attenuation

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of IEC EN 62614-1 test. IEC EN 62614-1 describes the starting condition requirements used to measure multimode attenuation in passive components and installed cable installations. The fiber types covered in this standard include A2-OMx category x = 3, 4, 5 and 50 (125 µm/1 µm) and A1-OM1 (62,5 µm/125 µm) multimode fibers.

IEC EN 62614-1 Fiber Optics - Multimode Start Conditions - Part 1: Start Condition Requirements for Measuring Multimode Attenuation

Detailed nominal test wavelengths are 850 nm and 1300 nm. This standard may be suitable for multimode attenuation measurements for other multimode categories or other wavelengths, but the source status for other categories and wavelengths is not defined here.

The purpose of these requirements is as follows:

  • Ensuring consistency of field measurements when using different types of test equipment;
  • Ensure consistency of factory measurements when using different types of test equipment;
  • To ensure consistency of field measurements compared to factory measurements.

This standard describes the launch condition requirements for optical attenuation using sources with a controlled confined flux (EF).

The source launch conditions are described at the output of the reference grade launch cable. The supplied source and launch cable are expected to be verified by the test equipment manufacturer to produce the specified launch measured according to IEC EN 61280-1-4. For reference grade fiber, core diameter tolerances of ±0,7 µm have been evaluated with some success. The variance of other parameters such as numerical aperture and core concentricity needs further study.

For field test equipment that uses a single optical port that initiates two wavelengths, a test lead conditioned with a mandrel may not allow an alignment on the target for both wavelengths simultaneously. In such a case, using the same mandrel for both wavelengths will reduce the margin of fit within the templates and increase uncertainty.
