The GMW 16740 standard, developed by the General Motors company, describes the dimensions and requirements for wire harnesses and defines test methods.
This standard is used for all passenger car and light-duty truck harnesses to evaluate and classify harness strips for a particular application. Class definitions, various temperature ranges encountered in or on vehicles are defined in a table in the standard. There is no international or national equivalent to this standard.
Harness tapes need to securely bundle wire harnesses and withstand extreme temperatures and environmental conditions. Products for the engine compartment must be highly resistant to abrasion, for example when applying tapes to reduce noise in the interior of the car.
