Unless otherwise specified, all cables covered by this standard may be subjected to voltages higher than 50 V ac or 75 V dc but not more than 300 V ac or 450 V dc. and must meet the basic requirements of the low voltage directive. Due to the current limitation associated with the conductor cross-sectional area, it is not designed for direct connection to the mains supply.

Stranded conductors shall consist of wires of circular cross-section and connected by concentric twisting or bundling without insulation between them. Since most of these cables are used with insulation displacement coupling devices (IDC), a maximum of seven strips should be used.

Insulation should be applied in such a way that it fits tightly to the conductor. If necessary, the stripping property of the insulation will be checked according to the method specified in EN 50289-3-17. When not used with IDC termination, it will be possible to strip the insulation from the conductor easily and without visible damage to the conductor, its sheathing, or the insulation remaining on the conductor.
