This Part 50289-4 of IEC EN 11 specifies a horizontally integrated fire test method for communication cables to determine flame propagation distance, optical smoke density, total heat release, heat release rate, ignition time and burning droplets/particles. Cables are tested in a representative installation condition.
The test chamber and the fire test chamber where the smoke measurement system is located should be provided with free airflow to maintain the chamber at a controlled pressure of the water column of 0 Pa to 12 Pa and a temperature higher than the ambient barometric pressure. 23°C ± 3°C and 50% ± 5% relative humidity throughout each test run. Fire test room and smoke measurement area will have controllable lighting.
The top cover support ribs shall be constructed of a structural material that can withstand the abuse of continuous testing. The protrusions should be level with the length and width of the room and with each other.
The velocity in the exhaust duct is determined by measuring the differential pressure in the flow path with a bidirectional probe connected to an electronic manometer or an equivalent measuring system and a thermocouple. The duplex probe consists of a stainless steel cylinder with a solid diaphragm at its center that divides the probe into two chambers. The probe is 22 mm long with an inner diameter of 44 mm. Pressure plugs on either side of the diaphragm are to support the probe.
