This test is valid only for cables protected by gas pressure. It should be read in conjunction with IEC EN 50289 Part 4-1, which contains the essential provisions for its application.

Although this test method is written mainly for communication cables in the European Standard, it can also be used for power cables if called upon by the relevant product standard. It should be noted that where a sheath is of cross-linked (heat-setting) material, the preparation of the molded plates must be done prior to cross-linking. The methods differ according to the nature of the UV source. Due to the excessive time to failure, the methods described are not suitable for products with UV resistance ≥ 2.

Devices with a fixed sample holder are also allowed. In this case, it is important that air can circulate around the sample to allow a homogeneous redistribution of temperature.

Where it is not possible to use the above samples (finished cable or outer sheath) for geometrical reasons, test samples should be cut from finished cable, a molded plate made from pieces of cable sheath, or a molded plate made from granules.

Twelve test specimens should be cut from a molded plate of the same material as the cable sheath to be tested. The material used for the test specimens must have the same composition and color as the corresponding cable sheath.
