IEC EN 60587 Test for Electrical Insulating Materials Used Under Severe Ambient Conditions

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of IEC EN 60587 testing. This standard describes two test methods for the evaluation of electrical insulating materials for use in severe ambient conditions at power frequencies (45 Hz to 65 Hz) by monitoring and evaluating resistance to erosion using liquid contaminant and inclined plane samples.

The two methods are:

  • Method 1: test at constant voltage,
  • Method 2: test at gradually increasing voltage.

Method 1 is the most widely used as there is less need for continuous supervision.

Test conditions are designed to accelerate the generation of effects, but do not reproduce all conditions encountered in service.

This edition includes the following important technical changes from the previous edition:

  • An improved description of experimental methods was applied;
  • Implemented an improved explanation of the preparation of test samples;
  • Added a more detailed description of electrode material and electrode quality;
  • Evaluation criterion B (line length) was removed for testing according to test method 2 (cascade monitoring voltage) as it was not applicable.
