IEC EN 60721-4-3 Environmental Conditions - Part 4-3: Correlation of Environmental Condition Classes of IEC EN 60721-3 Standard with Environmental Tests of IEC EN 60068 Standard - Fixed Use in Weather Protected Areas

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of IEC EN 60721-4-3 testing. IEC EN 60721-4-3 deals with the correlation and conversion of the conditions given in IEC EN 60721-3-3 with the environmental tests defined in IEC EN 60068-2. An environment can be composed of a number of environmental conditions such as dynamic, climatic and biological and other effects resulting from chemically and mechanically active substances. Only dynamic and climatic conditions are considered in this report. The purpose of this whitepaper is to provide guidance to the specification author with a set of easy-to-use tables that relate and transform these conditions.

It is important to highlight the indicative nature of this report, as it is almost impossible to specify mandatory requirements for worldwide use. However, where tests different from those recommended in this report are required, the guidance provided should establish principles and methodology for identifying alternative tests.

Conversion guidance is provided where the parameters used to define conditions in IEC EN 60721-3-3 differ from those used to define tests or severity ratings in IEC EN 60068-2.

IEC EN 60721-3-3 specifies the classes of environmental parameter groups together with the relevant environmental conditions to which products may be exposed during use. Parameters in these classes are given separately, but the product may be exposed to them at the same time. Some of the parameters are independent, while others, such as solar radiation and temperature, may be strongly related.

IEC EN 60068-2 specifies a set of environmental test procedures and appropriate test intensities. The choice of test intensities depends on the failure results of the product. Two types of products can be placed in places covered by the same environmental class. However, due to different failure results, one type of product can be tested under significantly more severe conditions than the other. This report only considers normal failure results; for higher failure results it may be necessary to increase test severity based on expert knowledge of the product.

Classes in use specify the environmental conditions to which the product is exposed during use, including installation, non-operation, maintenance and repair. Environmental conditions created by equipment co-located within an enclosure are not included in this class. The relevant specification should detail when the product is operational during the environmental testing program and what performance requirements and failure criteria should be measured before, during and after testing.
