IEC EN 60794-1-211 Fiber Optic Cables - Part 1-211: General Specification - Basic Optical Cable Test Procedures - Environmental Test Methods - Sheath Shrinkage - Method F11

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of IEC EN 60794-1-211 testing. IEC EN 60794-1-211 defines test procedures for measuring sheath shrinkage due to heat exposure of cables. The first test method, F11A, is included for cables where the fiber or buffered fiber and the cable jacket are intended to be completely terminated into a connector at one or both cable ends. A second test method, the F11B, is included in this document for general purpose sheath pull testing.

IEC EN 60794-1-211 Fiber Optic Cables - Part 1-211: General Specification - Basic Optical Cable Test Procedures - Environmental Test Methods - Sheath Shrinkage - Method F11

This standard contains the first F60794 method of IEC EN 1-22-11 called "sheath shrinkage test for cables for interconnecting cables". This method is renumbered as method F11A in this standard. There are technical changes to the F11A method. Thermal exposure from ambient to specified temperature was replaced by temperature cycling according to IEC EN 60794-1-22, method F1. Further, the continuation of test cycles until the shrinkage changed less than ±1 mm was replaced by a fixed number of cycles according to the detail specification.

For electrical and fiber optic cables, a tensile test is available for sheaths according to IEC EN 500-60811, which uses a nominal sample length of 503 mm and exposes the sample to a specified temperature and time. The sample is then allowed to cool in air to ambient temperature. Five such thermal cycles are performed.

The purpose of this test is to measure the shrinkage behavior of the sheath due to heat exposure of cables intended to be terminated with connectors. This test is not designed for cable assemblies with connectors.

The test specimens are placed horizontally on a surface in the temperature chamber allowing free movement of the sheath. When space permits, samples should be placed in the chamber in a flat configuration. If samples have to be wrapped, the test samples should be wrapped with a radius of not less than 150 mm to allow free movement of the sheath.
