IEC EN 60794-1-23 describes test procedures to be used in establishing uniform requirements for the geometric, material, mechanical and environmental properties of fiber optic cable elements. This standard applies to fiber optic cables used with telecommunications equipment and devices using similar techniques, and to cables with a combination of both optical fibers and electrical conductors. The purpose of this test is to characterize cable elements for joining purposes by determining the attenuation increase of an optical (fiber, ribbon, core tube, breakout unit, etc.) element when bent in a splice cap or similar device.
The purpose of this test is to determine the geometry of an optical fiber strip defined by the width, height and fiber alignment parameters for type testing purposes to undertake proper manufacturing process control. This test is not necessarily suitable for final product inspection and should not be used for this purpose unless otherwise stated.
The sample is prepared by cutting perpendicular to the axis of the strip and placing it in a curable resin or a tool holding the strip. If necessary, the specimen should be ground and polished to prepare a smooth steep end face.
