IEC EN 60794-3 Fiber Optic Cables - Part 3: Outdoor Cables - Standard Test for Cross-sectional Properties

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of IEC EN 60794-3 testing. IEC EN 60794-3 specifies requirements for optical fiber cables and cable elements intended for external use in communication networks. Other types of applications that require similar cable types are also conceivable. Requirements for cables to be used in channels, directly buried applications, overhead cables and cables to be used in lake and river crossings are included in this standard.

Cables for special use in sewers and water and gas pipes are also included. For aerial applications, this document does not cover all functional aspects of cables installed near overhead power lines. For such applications, additional requirements and test methods may be required. Also, this standard excludes optical ground wires and cables connected to the phase or ground conductors of overhead power lines. For cables for lake and river crossings, this document does not cover cable repair methods or repair capability, or cables used with underwater line risers.

Optical fibers meeting the requirements of IEC EN 60793-2 will be used. The fiber type will be agreed between the customer and the supplier. The maximum cabled fiber attenuation coefficient shall comply with IEC EN 60794-1-1. Specific values can be agreed between the customer and the supplier.

In general, optical cables contain several elements or separate components, depending on the cable design, which takes into account the cable application, operating environment and manufacturing processes, as well as the need to protect the fiber during transport and cabling. The material(s) used for a cable element should be chosen to be compatible with other elements in contact with it. An appropriate compatibility test method should be defined in the family or detail specification.

Tests can be performed on cable elements either unwired or on a finished cable. Unless otherwise specified, testing should be performed on cable elements in a finished cable. This means that if the cable element fabrication is done by the same manufacturer as the wiring, the test will only be performed on a finished cable. Testing should be performed on cable elements only if the cable element is provided by a third party; this does not exclude testing of the finished cable.
