IEC EN 60794-5 Fiber Optic Cables - Part 5: Cross-sectional Characteristics - Micro Channel Cabling Test for Blown Installation

EUROLAB, together with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of IEC EN 60794-5 testing. A cross-sectional specification, IEC EN 60794-5 specifies requirements for micro-channel fiber optic cables, micro-channel fiber units, micro-channels and shielded micro-channels for blow-through installation for outdoor or indoor use.

IEC EN 60794-5 Fiber Optic Cables - Part 5: Cross-sectional Characteristics - Micro Channel Cabling Test for Blown Installation

Micro-channel fiber optic cables and micro-channel fiber units use the structure of micro-channel or shielded micro-channels to support the installation and provide protection throughout the design life. These products can be used for applications such as communication and transmission networks, transmission, telephony and data processing equipment, control and monitoring applications. The wiring structures described in this cross-sectional specification are uniquely designed to facilitate and advantage installation by blowing into micro-ducts.

The aim is to design and manufacture microchannel fiber optic cables, microchannel fiber units, microchannels and shielded microchannels for an estimated operating life of at least 20 years. The purpose of the tests of this specification is to evaluate the performance of manufactured cables and within the agreed aging and performance limit tests. These tests are not intended to describe end-of-life performance, but can be used to predict such performance as agreed between customer and supplier.

It will be possible to insert or remove the micro-channel fiber optic cable or micro-channel fiber unit by blowing into or from the micro-channel during its operational life. When considering recovery of a product for possible reuse, care must be taken to minimize stress on the product and to handle the product carefully and pack it in accordance with the supplier's guidelines. Good practice also indicates that all products are properly tested when redeployed. Materials in a micro-channel optical fiber cable, micro-channel fiber unit, micro-channel, or shielded micro-channel must not present a health hazard within its intended use.

They differ from microduct fiber optic cables in that they provide less protection to the fibers they contain. Typically, it may comprise a miniature reinforced tube or array of fibers enclosed in a circular matrix of material with a low friction or glass bead coating. If fiber tearing is required, it will be possible to separate individual fibers from the unit without harming the optical or mechanical performance of the fiber. In addition, any color coding of the fibers must remain sufficiently intact to allow individual fibers to be distinguished from one another.
