IEC EN 60794-6 is a cross-sectional specification that covers the general characteristics of fiber optic cables, called indoor-outdoor cables, which are valid for indoor as well as outdoor environments.
Indoor-outdoor cables are deployed in outdoor plant environments and facilities so that both outdoor and indoor requirements are met. Typical areas of application are, for example, extending a cable duct into a building or using this design for centralized cabling in a central office, building or local area network, and using the same cable along the entire cable connection length, including both.
Cables with thermal and mechanical strength that have the characteristics generally associated with outdoor cable designs and make them suitable for outdoor use, being relatively flexible, compact and light at the same time and exhibiting the required fire performance indoors are specified in IEC EN 60794-6-10. . Flame retardant outdoor cables specified in IEC EN 60794-6-20 are used when a large part of the cable length is used as an outdoor cable and a part is used indoors.
The cable design can be derived from a typical outdoor cable design according to the product specifications described in IEC EN 60794-3. Specific performance regarding bend radii according to the installation situation and fire performance according to regional legislation basically require the selection of appropriate sheath material in combination with other material or design considerations. Due to its use in buildings with narrower space constraints, higher flexibility of the cable is often required for installation. Generally, smaller diameter cables are preferred. Weatherproof indoor cables as specified in (IEC EN 60794-6-30) are used when an indoor cable is used outdoors for a short distance (several metres), for example when the network access point (NAP) is very close to the building.
