IEC EN 60885-1 Electrical Test Methods for Electrical Cables - Part 1: Cables for Voltages up to 450-750 V (Including 450-750 V) - Electrical Tests for Cords and Wires

The electrical test methods described in this standard are provided as a guide to follow for testing wires, cords and cables where the relevant cable standard does not prescribe a different electrical test method.

Electrical tests only apply to:

• Unsheathed wires, cords and cables;
• Cores taken from fully sheathed cords and cables, all with a maximum rated voltage up to 450/750 V (including 450/750 V).

Insulation resistance measurement should be made immediately after the voltage test using the same sample if both tests are performed. For unsheathed cables and cords and unscreened wires, the test should be carried out on a 10 m long sample after removing any coating from the insulation; The veins of the flat twin flexible cords should be separated.

For cores taken from sheathed cables and cords, testing should be performed on a 10 m long core sample after the sheath and other sheathing or filling has been removed from the insulation, taking care not to damage the insulation.

Samples should be immersed in water at ambient temperature with the tips protruding enough to prevent flashing at the specified test voltage; immersion time should be at least 16 hours, but not more than 24 hours.
