IEC EN 60885-2 Electrical Test Methods for Electrical Cables - Part 2: Partial Discharge Tests

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of IEC EN 60885-2 testing. The purpose of the test is to determine the magnitude of the partial discharge at a certain voltage and with a certain precision. For the purpose of this method, the definitions given in IEC Publication 270: Partial Discharge Measurements apply.

IEC EN 60885-2 Electrical Test Methods for Electrical Cables - Part 2: Partial Discharge Tests

The following definitions are particularly important:

  • Apparent charge, q, or discharge magnitude;
  • Response rate and sensitivity.

The equipment consists of a high-voltage power supply of sufficient kilovolt-ampere capacity for the cable length under test, a voltmeter for high voltages, a partial discharge meter, and a discharge calibrator. All components of the test equipment shall have a sufficiently low noise level to achieve the required sensitivity.

The partial discharge measuring instrument consists of a test circuit, an oscilloscope and, if desired, an indicating instrument with appropriate amplifying equipment to indicate the presence of partial discharges and detect individual discharge pulses.

While the cable to be tested is connected to the detection circuit, the detection response sensitivity of the apparatus should be checked with a calibration pulse injected first at one end of the cable and then at the other end. The lowest response in these two cases is taken as the overall response to establish the response rate k (where k is the number of picoculombs of the calibrating pulse or the ratio of picoculombs of the calibrating pulse per millimeter deviation on an oscilloscope screen).

The primary calibration circuit must be disconnected before the high voltage test transformer is energized, unless the calibration capacitor is rated for use at the relevant test voltages. Amplifier gain should not be readjusted after this is done, unless a means is provided to continuously display an appropriate calibration signal throughout the test.
