Two test procedures are described:

  • Single stimulus ratings;
  • Pairwise Comparisons.

The tests described in this report will be performed in a room, similar in size and acoustic characteristics to those of an average living room. Specific recommendations are given on room size, acoustic characteristics, arrangement of speakers and listeners, and environmental conditions.

This whitepaper describes experimental procedures, including recommendations for the selection of program material and the processing and presentation of final data. It may be helpful to consider some of the recommendations in AES 20. It should be understood that the issues of experimental design, execution and statistical analysis are complex and only the most general guidelines can be given. It is recommended to consult professionals with expertise in experimental design and statistics.

The use of multi-channel formats is becoming more commonplace, mainly for the local presentation of surround sound and cinema. The procedures described in this report apply to any number of channels.

If the number of speakers to be tested is large, the pairwise comparison listening test is lengthy because each speaker has to be compared to the next. A shorter method is single stimulus evaluation. With this method, each object is evaluated once. The rating is almost independent of the speaker range tested. Each object is rated in absolute terms, while a paired comparison provides a relative ranking of the order of the speakers tested.
