IEC EN 61754-1 Fiber Optic Interconnect Devices - Test for Fiber Optic Connector Interfaces

This part of IEC EN 61754 contains standardized interfaces for international use. It consists of individual plug and adapter interface sets. Each set contains at least two opposing interfaces that match together. Therefore, the standards ensure that only two opposing interfaces match together and that they match with a certain tolerance of fit between the matching features.

It is important to emphasize that standard interfaces define only physical dimensions and no performance guarantees are implied and should not be assumed for standard-compliant connectors. Manufacturers using the standards are responsible for positioning the optical fiber or device port at the optical data target location with the accuracy required to meet their required performance.

An optical connector, by definition, mates with another optical component. Typically, the mating component is another optical connector. In many cases, however, the mating component is not another connector, but rather an optical component such as a switch, branch device, or active device. The part of the component that contains the matching features to receive and position the connector is called the adapter.

This standard makes a distinction between a connector interface and an adapter interface. An adapter interface may not include an optical reference point target, such as where two connector plugs are interlocked and aligned with an alignment sleeve. However, the adapter contains an optical reference point target each time it positions a fiber optic or fiber optic waveguide, as in an active device or branching device.

This standard is not intended as a measurement standard. Any indicator included as a method for specifying the dimensions and positions of features is not intended to be designed exactly as shown so long as the specified indicator dimensions are met.
