IEC EN 61857-22 Electrical Insulation Systems - Thermal Evaluation Procedures - Part 22: Special Requirements for the Encapsulated Coil Model - Wire Wound Electrical Insulation System

IEC EN 61857-22 provides a general-purpose procedure for the evaluation of wire-wound systems using the general-purpose encapsulated coil model (ECM) where the application is unknown.

The ECM is useful in evaluating EIM compliance used in a candidate EIS. It is equally capable of simulating the effects of real production processes such as wrapping techniques, finishing techniques and encapsulation. The winding wires can be attached to binding posts or guide wires, each running along the encapsulating wall.

All test objects should undergo initial screening tests after repeated thermal endurance test cycles in the following order:

• A thermal aging subcycle;
• A sub-cycle of prediagnostic mechanical stress, other prediagnostic requirements, and moisture exposure, respectively;
• A dielectric diagnostic test.

Unless agreed by all interested parties, both the reference and candidate EIS will be subjected to a low temperature thermal shock. Thermal shock should be administered by placing the ECMs directly in a low-temperature room at (–20 ± 5)°C from ambient conditions for at least 2 hours. No voltage should be applied during this time.
