IEC EN 62053-41 applies only to static watt-hour meters with accuracy class 0,5 and 1 for the measurement of DC electrical energy in DC systems, and only for their type testing.

This standard applies to electrical measuring equipment designed for:

  • Measuring and controlling electrical energy in bipolar electrical networks with a voltage of up to 1 500 V DC, where one of the poles is connected to earth;
  • All functional elements, including additional modules, must be enclosed or form a single meter case, with the exception of display screens;
  • Works with or without integrated or standalone instrumentation displays;
  • It can be installed in a specific matching socket or rack;
  • Optionally, it provides additional functions beyond the measurement of electrical energy.

They can be used to measure DC electrical energy as well as for the following application areas:

  • If the measurement is made on the DC side, at EV (electric vehicle) charging stations or EV charging infrastructures;
  • In information technology (IT) server groups;
  • At DC supply points for communication equipment;
  • If the measurement is made on the DC side, in low voltage DC networks for residential or commercial areas;
  • In solar PV (photovoltaic) systems where DC power generation is measured;
  • At DC supply points for public transport networks (eg trolleybus, etc.).

Meters designed to operate with low-power instrument transformers, LPITs, as defined in the IEC EN 61869 series, may be tested for compliance with this standard only if such meters and their LPITs are tested together and meet the requirements of directly connected meters.

This standard does not cover measures for the detection and prevention of fraudulent attempts (tamper) that compromise the performance of a meter.
