This part of IEC EN 62877 applies to electrolytes and their components used for charging vented lead-acid batteries, such as dry or wet charged cells or batteries, and for electrolyte replacement or electrolyte density adjustment of batteries in operation.
This international standard defines the composition, purity and properties of the electrolyte to be applied in the absence of specific instructions from the battery manufacturer. Concentrated and diluted sulfuric acid is highly irritating and caustic on the skin and corrosive to clothing and many materials. The electrolyte should be prepared by the battery manufacturer or by qualified personnel only. Adequate personal protective equipment such as goggles, face shield, rubber gloves, apron and similar will be used.
Mixing a high concentration of sulfuric acid with water produces a large amount of heat. To avoid splashing hot acid, sulfuric acid should always be poured into the water, not vice versa. The relevant material safety data sheets (MSDS) should be consulted. Density measurement of the electrolyte can be carried out with suitable instruments such as aerometers, hydrometers, diffractometers or vibration-type density meters. The values obtained should be normalized to the specified reference temperature.
During the discharge of the battery, the electrolyte density decreases. Therefore, the indicated electrolyte densities relate to a fully charged state. Permissible limit values must be specified by the battery manufacturer for various battery types and applications.
