IEC TR 62543 Standard Test for High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) Power Transfer Using Voltage Source Converters (VSC)

It describes self-commutating converters that use not only voltage sourced (incorporating a capacitive energy storage medium and the polarity of the DC voltage remains constant), but also semiconductor devices that can be both switched on and off by control action.

The scope includes 2-level and 3-level converters with pulse-width modulation (PWM), as well as multi-level converters, modular multi-level converters and cascading bi-level converters. However, 2-level and 3-level converters operating without PWM in square wave output mode are excluded.

HVDC power transmission using voltage source converters is known as "VSC transmission". The various types of circuits that can be used for VSC transmission are described in this standard, along with their basic operating characteristics and typical applications. The general purpose is to provide a guide to assist recipients in their task of specifying a VSC transmission scheme. Line commutated and current source converters are specifically excluded from this document.
